Javi Serrano wins ‘against the clock’ and by hundredths of a second his first victory in the U23 category: first leader in Zamora

On Tuesday evening, Javi Serrano (5’29”) became the first leader of the Vuelta Ciclista a Zamora after beating Sergio Geerlings (Valverde Team) in the opening time trial of the Tour of Zamora, held in Bragança (Portugal). A short time trial, with its technical side.

Geerlings, who went out to compete in the first third of a day in which appeared at some point a timid rain and some wind, set a time of 5’29” that no one could beat during the rest of the race. Finally, a Serrano who rode at more than 49.2 km/h managed to do it by hundredths of a second, after the review by the judges. Andrea Pietrobon also had a great time, fourth, two seconds behind his teammate.

“The time trial is a very nice discipline and this is how I got my first victory as U23. The truth is that during this year we have hit the post several times, almost winning, and we had that thorn in our side. At the beginning of the year I did have some bad moments, but I’ve been very consistent over the last few months. It’s a win that makes me very happy and now, with all the team we have, we’ll see if we can also maintain the lead”, says Serrano.

The Spaniard adds: “We are all very close, the competition is going to be strong and the race is going to be very hard and long. It’s sure to be tough because of the heat and the stages will be tough. We will go day by day. We also started with yellow in the Vuelta a Extremadura, but in the end we missed a little bit. Let’s see how it goes now, but as I said, stage by stage”.

This Wednesday, to start, the first demanding stage between Bragança and Alcañices, already on Zamora soil, after an orographically complicated route with more than 2,000 metres of accumulated vertical drop.
