A race with more than a century of existence is not a bad stage to debut in competition with top professional riders. Fran Muñoz, rider of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation and one of the three stagiaires of this season of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, made his debut this Monday in the framework of the Coppa Bernocchi (where Andrea Pietrobon also competed) and he did it with a nice and outstanding performance: Fran Muñoz was one of the protagonists of the great breakaway of the day.

“The truth is that I’m quite happy with the result. I was quite expectant about how it would be, in the end it’s something you’ve been dreaming about for a long time, and of course I’m very happy with the experience”, said Muñoz after the race. The Catalan with Asturian roots, current Copa de España Élite Sub23 champion, shared a room with another former member of the U23 squad, David Martín from Seville.

“I was asked to try to be in the breakaway and that’s what I was looking for from the start. We formed the breakaway quickly, almost from the start, taking advantage of the initial road, full of bends and counter-curves. We entered the intermediate circuit with six minutes to go, which we had to complete seven laps and was quite hard, and the breakaway only went down on the last lap, with the race very well selected. Even then I had already stayed”, he added. Jon Barrenetxea (Caja Rural), Alan Jousseaume (Total Energies) and Giulio Masotto (Team Corratec) were his adventure companions.

Asked if he was surprised by any aspect of this experience, Muñoz is honest: “Not really. If I had to highlight something, it would be the tranquillity. They always tell you that the atmosphere in the race and in general everything is much calmer, but until you see it live you don’t believe it. Here everyone goes as if they were on autopilot. And I’m delighted with the atmosphere within the team, very good, very good vibes”. Muñoz is selected to compete again with the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team this Thursday, in the Gran Piemonte.
