Enric Mas won the podium at Vuelta a Palencia thanks to a last echelon

The competition was very tough in the Vuelta a Palencia under 23, which ended yesterday after four stages very demanding and where the podium was in the air until the last kilometer, as the second overall, Gonzalo Andrés, fell into the trap of echelons and the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation jumped at the chance to get on the podium with its best rider, Enric Mas, who thus took third place overall.

“We came to the Tour of Palencia to win with Enric Mas and after four stages has demonstrated the high quality he has, despite being his first year in the category”, said Fran Contador, the team manager, at the end of the race. “Was a pity the breakaway of the first stage where was one of the favorites, Miguel Angel Benito, who was the final winner. That day Enric Mas lost 1:18, but every day we have put our rivals against the ropes”.

Especially hard was the third stage, where Enric Mas attacked solo on the climb of San Glorio pass and crowned with more than a minute over the first of the general. There were still 50 kilometers to go and yet the
Mallorcan rider resisted to the last 8 kilometers when behind managed to regroup and neutralize his advantage. Yesterday, in the last stage, the Specialized team allied with Zirauna, that was seeking victory in the sprint, to make an echelon where was catch the second overall, Gonzalo Andrés, prompting a fierce battle in the last 50 kilometers for the podium. Finally, Enric Mas achieved his goal and went from fourth to third place overall, supported by the great work of his teammates.

“I’m very happy with the performance of the team”, said Fran Contador. “They have behaved as professionals from first to last one despite their youth. They are learning fast and I am convinced that next year will get many success in this category”.

The Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation, directed by Patricio García, was composed in the Tour of Palencia by Enric Mas, Juan Camacho, David de Pablos, David Casillas, Oscar Linares, Peio Olaberria and Diego Noriega. The Vuelta a Cantabria will be the next appointment for Under 23 squad, while riders of Junior-Flex will ride the Premundial in Beasain.
