Stage, Regularity and second overall for Enric Mas in the Tour of Bidasoa

The Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation finished the Tour of Bidasoa with a great performance of the team and its leader here, Enric Mas, winner of the third stage, leader of the Regularity and finally second overall, just one second behind the winner, Colombian Steven Calderon.

IMG_0865The Spaniard Enric Mas, in his second year as U23, confirmed the expectations placed on him by his sport director, Rafael Diaz Justo, who considers him “the best Spanish climber fo his category”. In fact, he won the sprint to the group of the best in the third stage of this round, in Orio, while today, in the queen stage, was the main actor, to launch an attack in the last climb of the day, Erlaitz, and go alone in front of his closest rivals.

However, Amezqueta and Rosón, the two strongest of the bunch with the leader, managed to catch up before the summit, located about 18 km from the finish. Despite the work done ahead, having until 26 seconds advantage, the leader, Calderon, found support on italian team Colpack, along with those managed to neutralize the attack, moment when Trueba did a counterattack looking for the stage win, while Enric Mas returned to win the leader’s sprint group.

After what happened throughout the whole tour, Enric Mas lost the overall victory due to the second that Steven Calderon won in the sprint of the first stage, with arrival on top of Irisarri Land, where judges scoring one second difference between the Colombian and the rest of the favorites in the sprint of the leading group, a time that would end up being worth the Tour of Bidasoa 2015.

“We came to this race in order to win”, said Rafael Diaz Justo today, “because I knew the potential of the team we have and what we showed. The balance is very positive, we are confirming the work that the Alberto Contador Foundation is doing and we have achieved it in the best tour of the Spanish calendar”.

The sport director of the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation concluded that this result “give us much moral to face the next great challenge for the team, the Giro d’Aosta, next July in Italy”. Meanwhile, next week the team will split in two to contest the Tour of La Coruña and the Championship of Cantabria.
