Enric Mas, mejor joven en la Carrera de la Paz U-23

Enric Mas fue el mejor hombre en la general del Specialized-Fundación Alberto Contador Team,  que este fin de semana ha corrido en la República Checa la Carrera de la Paz U-23, una prueba de categoría 2.2 en la que los hombres de Rafa Díaz Justo se enfrentaron a equipos más veteranos, a pesar de lo cual el mallorquín logró terminar cuarto en la general y proclamarse mejor joven de esta vuelta, que se disputó a lo largo de tres exigentes etapas, las dos últimas con final en alto.

De las tres etapas de la ronda, la primera, disputada sobre un circuito urbano, fue la única en la que no se marcaron diferencias, salvo por los dos hombres que saltaron en pos de la victoria en la última vuelta. El pelotón entró a 9 segundos, con Juan Antonio López Cózar, décimo, como el mejor español en el sprint.

Las diferencias se hicieron al día siguiente, con un puerto final de 10 kilómetros, en el que los favoritos se jugaron el destino de la carrera. Allí, los dos primeros en el podio ocuparon ya los primeros puestos del día, mientras Enric Mas acabó sexto, a 35 segundos, igual que el ex corredor de la Fundación Alberto Contador Álvaro Cuadros (cuarto), en el mismo tiempo. A él, sin embargo, le tocaría al día siguiente trabajar para su líder, por lo que tuvo que renunciar a sus opciones personales, aunque está demostrando a lo largo de la temporada capacidad de adaptación al duro salto desde los juniors a un equipo continental.

La tercera y última etapa, las más dura de la vuelta, con tres puertos y un exigente final en alto de casi 3 kilómetros, confirmó la general en sus dos primeras posiciones, al repetir idéntica clasificación el australiano Samuel Spokes (Etixx) y el belga Bram van Broeckhoven, primer y segundo en el podio final.

Frente a ellos, Enric Mas supo llegar al final muy bien situado, gracias también al gran trabajo de sus compañeros, que lo dieron todo por él, incluido David Casillas, que sufrió una caída que le obligó a la retirarse. Mas aguantó hasta la línea de llegada en el selecto grupo de los favoritos y terminó tercero, justo por detrás los dos más fuertes, que habían hecho las diferencias el día anterior, confirmándose como el mejor corredor de primer año de la categoría (19 años) frente a los 21 y 22 de los que le precedieron en la general.

Una vez más, el Specialized-Fundación Alberto Contador demostró la progresiva madurez que está consiguiendo en poco tiempo este grupo de jóvenes ciclistas de primer y segundo año, gracias a estas salidas fuera de España, la primera de las cuales fue el duro Tour de Bretaña, donde también se midieron con muchos de los mejores equipos continentales de Europa.

Enric Mas, best young at the Peace

Enric Mas was the better man in the general classification of Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation Team, that this weekend has run in the Czech Republic the Peace Race U-23, proof of 2.2 category in which men of Rafa Diaz Justo faced more veteran teams, despite which the Spaniard managed to finish fourth overall and proclaim best young of this tour, played over three challenging stages, with the last two finishing up hill.

Of the three stages of the tour, the first, held on a street circuit, was the only one in which were no differences, except for the two men who jumped in for the win on the last lap. The peloton came at 9 seconds, with Juan Antonio López Cózar, tenth, as the best Spanish in the sprint.

The differences were made next day, with a final climb 10 kilometers long, where the favorites decided the destiny of the race. There, the first two on the podium took the top posts of the day while Enric Mas finished sixth, at 35 seconds, same time than former rider of Alberto Contador Foundation Álvaro Cuadros (fourth). He, however, would have  to work next day for his leader, so had to give up his personal choices, but is showing along the whole season his adaptation to the hard jump from juniors to a continental team.

Third and final stage was the harder of the tour, with three climbs and a demanding up hill finish nearly 3 kilometers long, and confirmed the general in its first two positions, repeating identical ranking with Australian Samuel Spokes (Etixx) and Belgian Bram van Broeckhoven, first and second on the final podium.

In front of them, Enric Mas managed to reach the finish very well positioned, thanks to the great work of his team mates, who gave everything for him, including David Casillas, who suffered a fall that forced him to retire. Mas remained until the finish line in the select group of favorites and finished third, just behind the two strongest, who had made the difference the day before, confirming him as the best young rider ( 19 years) compared to 21 and 22 years old  who preceded him in the general.

Again, the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation showed the progressive maturity that is quickly getting this group of young riders of first and second year in the category, thanks to these races outside Spain, the first of which was the tough Tour of Britain, where also they were confronted with many of the best continental teams in Europe.
