36ª Clásica Ciudad de Torredonjimeno
October 4th: Torredonjimeno-Torredonjimeno (160 km)

David Martín from Seville is putting his provisional leadership of the Spanish Cup this Sunday with a demanding test in the Jaén region. The Clásica de Torredonjimeno, one of the races with the greatest orographic difficulty on the spanish national calendar, receives an avid competition squad in which Martín and Vicente Hernaiz from Valladolid occupy the first two positions in the classification. “We arrived with a lot of desire, it’s time to defend the red jersey at home and in one of the races that has the most accumulated unevenness”, says the guy from Mairena de Aljarafe.

Martín and Hernaiz lead a very powerful Kometa-Xstra Cycling Team which is completed by the Catalan Álex Martín, the La Mancha native Fernando Tercero, the local Mario Vilches and the two U23 riders who have competed as stagiaires with the continental team of the Contador Foundation in the Tour of Hungary and the Giro d’Italia U23, respectively: the Riojan Arturo Grávalos and the Asturian Edu Pérez-Landaluce.

“The work is practically done, all that remains is to be lucky and enjoy such a beautiful race, even more so wearing a jersey that we want to defends. I will try to leave the team as high as possible in the home race”, said David Martín, who was promoted to the lead after his great victory in the Ángel Lozano Memorial in Valladolid.

On the route of Torredonjimeno, an itinerary with many mouths that are reducing strength. The first hundred kilometres have a multitude of steep slopes which do not in themselves make the race any easier. From Castillo de Locubín comes the chain of climbs to Locubín (more than eight kilometres at an average of over 5% and ramps of 11%) and Valdepeñas (3.5 km to 6.5% and maximum percentages of 9%), in addition to other climbs of some entity that do not score and surely condition the evolution of the test.

The 2020 edition of the Clásica de Torredonjimeno will be the penultimate round of the Spanish Cup to be scored, as in recent weeks several events have confirmed its definitive suspension in this very atypical year as a result of the evolution of the pandemic generated by the COVID-19. The last one was, precisely, the Macario Grand Prix in Alcalá de Henares; a resignation that makes the Memorial Valenciaga the last race of the competition. However, the routes to Torredonjimeno have to be negotiated first.
