Fifth place for Vicente Hernaiz at the finish in Hervás after a day in which EOLO-KOMETA was offensive

XXVI Vuelta a Extremadura
Stage 3: Villarreal de San Carlos (Parque Nacional de Monfragüe) – Hervás (144 km)

Vicente Hernaiz signed a fifth position in the third and last stage of the Tour of Extremadura, a mountainous day with the passes of El Piornal and El Torno in the route in which the U23 team of the Contador Foundation looked for several movements. In the end, about twenty riders reached the last straight and there Benjamí Prades, winner of the overall final of the Extremadura round, imposed his top speed.

A fall in the early stages of a stage that was once again tackled at a vertiginous pace, and with fog in the early stages, left Edu Pérez-Landaluce out of the race, sore from the blow. In the movements that would come later the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team tried as far as possible to have a presence. Javi Serrano was involved in a few skirmishes. More consistent was the breakaway in which Yago Segovia rode, leading on the first climb. On this climb, Alejandro Luna also went on the attack, from the group of favourites.

On the descent of El Piornal a reduced peloton led by David Martín gave chase. Moments of temporary uncertainty gave way to a new regrouping in which David himself and Vicente Hernaiz tried to put some ground in the middle before the ascent to El Torno. There, however, Álex Martín made his move. Initially there was a large selection, very few units and among them the leader, but again the race regrouped.

In the last 20 kilometres, Álex Martín made a new solo move. The rider from Barcelona rode with a thirty-second lead as he faced the uphill, albeit sinewy, final part of the stage. But the work of the Rias Baixas team put paid to his attempt and others that followed.
