Davide Piganzoli finishes in the top ten in the final overall of the Giro Giovani

44ª Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 10: San Vito al Tagliamento – Castelfranco Veneto (162,7 km)

A magnificent result that comes to give presence to the great work deployed during these ten days on the routes of the Giro U23 and to mitigate, only in part, the regret for the crashes that weighed down the options of Fernando Tercero, that depleted Joan Martí Bennassar or forced the abandonment of Vicente Hernaiz after the third stage: Davide Piganzoli, the very young rider of Morbegno, finished tenth in a final general where the Spanish Juan Ayuso won. For the Irishman Ben Healy, alone, and from the breakaway, the last stage.

Because on the final day the breakaway triumphed. A movement gestated on the ashes of another previous one of nine cyclists, among them the Balearic rider Bennassar. The presence of the Muro di Ca’del Poggio, little more than one kilometre, but with steep slopes in the middle of a landscape of vineyards, generated a new situation in the race from which a quartet would emerge, after an attack, the winner of the last stage.

Davide Piganzoli crossed the finish line with race winner Juan Ayuso: “Of course, if you told me this a few days ago, before the Giro, I wouldn’t have imagined it. I would have thought it was a joke. For me all this was something completely new. The race has gone by and I’ve been growing day by day, feeling good, recovering and resting well, avoiding breakdowns or crashes… I’m very happy with this tenth place in the Giro. It confirms that we are working well. And of course we are working in an unbeatable place like the Contador Foundation team. These days have been wonderful with the teammates and staff members. A very good, unforgettable experience”.

Rafa Díaz Justo, director of the U23 structure in the Giro d’Italia: “We have to be very happy with what has been done during this Giro. The performance of all the guys has been very, very, very, very good. It has been a very hard Giro, with many crashes, with very bad weather at important moments… The team has done a great race. Today, in the last stage, Joan Martí was in top form, in his place. And with a view to an intermediate sprint where there was bonus time, there was the option of losing tenth place there, the riders managed it well. Personally I think the team comes out of this Giro on a good note”. EOLO-KOMETA U23 finished as the eleventh formation among the 35 participants in the overall team classification.
