Davide Piganzoli bids farewell to the season with a broken right collarbone

49ª Vuelta a Salamanca
Etapa 2: Ledrada – La Alberca (167,1 km)

Davide Piganzoli will not start this Monday’s queen stage of the Vuelta a Salamanca. The Italian rider of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation, one of the riders who was involved in the crashes of the first stage, suffers a fracture in his right collarbone that will now have to be assessed in Italy to study the possibility of undergoing surgery.

“It’s not the best way to finish the season”, regrets Piga as he travels to Madrid to catch a flight to Milan. The rider of the Valtellina, who had been chosen as one of the three stagiaires of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, misses several races that had in the program in the final straight of the campaign with the ProTeam structure. “Without a doubt it was a dream to be able to compete with the professionals, but now the only thing that I think about is the next season”.

About the fracture, Piganzoli says: “I was involved in two crashes. I broke my collarbone in the first one, but I was able to get back on the bike. Then I was involved in another crash. My arm was immobilised and I rode the last twenty kilometres with only one arm on the handlebars. A broken collarbone and several bruises as a souvenir”. Piganzoli finished the first stage of the Vuelta a Salamanca in 98th place, 13’42” behind the winner.
