David Martín repeats his victory in Valladolid and scores the first victory in the 2021 Cup

X Memorial Ángel Lozano
Valladolid –Valladolid (160,5 km)

David Martín, from Seville, imposed his top speed in the mass sprint that took place this Sunday at the Memorial Ángel Lozano in Valladolid. Martín, winner of the race in 2020, once again vindicated himself as one of the best sprinters of the spanish amateur scene with a new victory in the Copa de Españas, the first of this edition for the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation, in which he beat Nahuel d’Aquila, José Gómez, Alejandro Gómiz or the overall leader Marc Brustenga. A vibrant and very close sprint.

The race followed the expected pattern, with a breakaway that grew to four units that led its development for much of the day with a never worrying income. The neutralisation came with 40 kilometres to go, with the second pass over the Alto de Portillo and the climbs of Simancas and Robladillo still ahead. Time for control and support where the U23 structure of the Foundation worked to protect David, to break down some of the movements that occurred and, as far as possible, also to make the race harder on the climbs.

Some of these movements involved local rider Vicente Hernaiz or the Balearic Joan Martí Bennassar, but the peloton faced the last ten kilometres grouped together, at a very high pace and with no intention of leaving any margin for any attempt to avoid the sprint that took place in this final part. In the sprint, Martín signed his second victory of the season, the first both for him and for the team in the Copa de España. A result with the signature of the whole team after the last few competitions in which all the good work had not been rewarded.

David Martín, winner of the Memorial Ángel Lozano: “Without the great team we had with us it would not have been possible to compete in the race. It was a fairly comfortable race for me. At the beginning I had a bad feeling, but little by little I felt better. I had the instruction to ride very calmly all day long”.

Rafa Díaz Justo, team manager: “It was a fast race, but also comfortable to ride in the bunch. We rode very wide all day. I didn’t have everything with me because in a race like this there are always more people with strength at the end and if winning is difficult in itself, in this context it’s even more difficult. In the last 40 kilometres, in order to generate more wear and tear, we tried to move on all the hills. David, for his part, was instructed to ride calmly. In the end, the victory came. We have broken the curse and we have positioned ourselves a bit in the Cup. But this doesn’t stop”.
