Alejandro Ropero from Granada joins the Kometa Cycling Team for the 2020 season

News · 1 October, 2019

The one that will be the third sports project of the Alberto Contador Foundation in the continental category confirmed the arrival of Alejandro Ropero from Granada to his team for the next season. This is a very complete and regular rider who has a good top speed in small groups. In addition, Otura already knows the continental structure perfectly, as he competed in it as stagiaire in the Vuelta a Burgos 2018. Ropero was seen with a leak and worked a lot in favor of his teammates.

The rider from Granada has been one of the most outstanding riders in the Spanish amateur scene in the last years and he is another new example of a runner formed within the teams of the Alberto Contador Foundation, to whose junior team he arrived after participating in two editions of the Selection Campus. In 2019, Ropero has achieved many places of honour, with the second place in the general standings of the Spanish Cup and the Santikutz Klasika de Legazpi al fente, and three triumphs: the first stage of the Bidasoa Itzulia, the queen stage of the Vuelta a Zamora and the Trofeo Fira d´Agost de Xátiva. In the last race of the season, the Volta a Galicia, Ropero was three seconds away from the victory in his final general.

“Alejandro was one of the three riders that we climbed for 2017. Although he may have jumped being the third man, with his enormous work these years, and with very clear ideas, he has earned a place in the professional world. He has gone from less to more and possibly is the one who gives the most defined jump as a runner and with more honours”, contributes Rafa Díaz Justo, his director in the U23 team. “He is a very fast cyclist who has a very good mid-mountain run. We think that, with his age, he can adapt very well to the category”.

Ropero arrived to the fourth project sub23 of the Alberto Contador Foundation from a junior team with which he had managed to finish third in the Spanish Cup of his category in 2016, an edition in which he would achieve victory in his second test: the Trophy 15 d´abril of La Canonja. In his promotion to a higher category he accompanied Claudio Clavijo from Huelva and Tomeu Gelabert from Mallorca.

“It’s a dream come true, above all because I can fulfil it with the people I’ve trained with. This was the objective I had in mind since I jumped to the U23 category. I know the values of the Foundation, how they run, how they are, how they treat the runners… Without a doubt it is the best place to make the jump. I’m happy for the year I’ve done, a year in which I’ve sought above all to be regular. I haven’t been able to finish all the races I would have liked, but with perspective it also feels good to be in the fight,” explains Ropero about his signing.

“For the future, the immediate objective is to adapt as quickly as possible to the new category. There’s still room for promotion, but the aim is to make a name for ourselves and grow professionally. If we work well and do things the right way, we’ll go far. But also with a lot of patience. The expectation is to continue doing it well, to continue with the path of work and, of course, that I also respect luck to bring everything I can to the team and also reward the vote of confidence they have placed in me in the Foundation,” he concludes.

Félix García Casas, sports manager of the Foundation’s teams: “Alejandro is another clear example of a rider who has passed through all our structures from the Selection Campus. He has become a cyclist little by little until this year he became one of the representative guy of the U23 scene in Spain. He is a cyclist who is prepared and we think that he can adapt very well to professionalism. He is solvent, very intelligent in the race, has a good top speed and has a good mid-mountain pass”.
