The Balearic Joan Martí Bennassar, regional champion in the discipline of time trial

Championships of the Balearic Islands 2020
Santa Margalida-Santa Margalida (16 km ITT)

The Majorcan Joan Martí Bennassar was proclaimed this Friday autonomous champion in the individual time trial when he won in the appointment celebrated in the population of Santa Margalida on a route of 16 kilometres. The U23 cyclist from Marratxí, third last rider to take the start, won with a time of 21:29, 54 seconds ahead of Mateu Gamundi (Arabay Team) and 1:03 ahead of Pau Llaneras (Caja Rural).

In what is his favorite discipline, Bennassar marked an average of 44.6 km/h, making the best final record among all participants, up to 86 riders from different categories. “It has been a quite hot afternoon, it has been lucky to compete at 19.40 when the sun was not so strong”, he says.

The rider of the Kometa-Xstra Cycling Team U23 explained about his gold medal: “The time trial course had quite a few repechages. I felt very good, my legs were fine and I could always ride with a lot of cadence to maintain a high speed. It’s a good test for the time trial at the Nationals in Jaen, although there’s still a lot of work to be done to improve the form by then”.

The U23 Spanish Championships will take place on 21 August on a 29,4km route that starts in Cazorla, travels to Peal del Becerro and returns to Cazorla to climb up to the village of La Iruela. A race with an uphill finish that, together with the presumed heat in the area, will be demanding. Joan Martí Bennassar has won the bronze medal in the last two editions.
